||

## 🛠️ Step 1: Pre-Departure Setup (In Australia)
|
||

||
### 1. Aussie Broadband Network Activation
|
||
* Open the **MyAussie App**.
|
||
* Navigate to Mobile Service Settings and toggle **International Roaming to "Enabled"**.
|
||
* *Note: This step is free. It simply allows the SIM to receive network signals overseas.*

||
|
||
### 2. Purchase & Install Travel eSIM
|
||
* Buy a China-compatible travel eSIM (e.g., Airalo, MobiMatter, Holafly) that explicitly features a **built-in VPN** or **re-routed data routing** (via Hong Kong/Singapore) to naturally bypass the Great Firewall.
|
||
* Follow the provider's instructions to scan the QR code and download the digital profile onto the Pixel 7.
|
||

### 3. Setup Essential Travel Apps

* **WeChat & Alipay:** Download both apps and create accounts using his Australian mobile number *before* leaving.
|
||
* **Link Funds:** Open the digital wallet section in both apps and link an Australian Visa or Mastercard. (Alipay is generally the most reliable for foreign cards).

* **Calls & SMS Preference:** Leave selected as **Aussie Broadband** *(Allows him to receive incoming bank 2FA text codes for free)*

* **Mobile Data:** Toggle **ON**
|
||
* **Data Roaming:** Toggle **ON** *(Required for the travel eSIM to talk to local Chinese towers)*

* **Auto-switch mobile data:** Toggle **OFF** *(Prevents the phone from grabbing the Aussie Broadband network if the eSIM drops signal)*

## ⚠️ Vital On-The-Ground Rules for China
|
||
|
||
* **Handling Phone Calls & SMS:** If a standard phone call comes through to his Australian number, he **must not answer it**. Sending an SMS or answering a call will instantly trigger Aussie Broadband's $5/day fee. For all communications, he must use WeChat, WhatsApp, or Alipay voice/video calls over his eSIM data.

* **The Wi-Fi Trap:** If he connects to hotel or public Wi-Fi networks in China, the local firewall will instantly block Google, WhatsApp, and Australian banking apps. Tell him to **turn off Wi-Fi** and stick exclusively to his Travel eSIM data whenever using Western apps.
